Flood Control Bags

Flood Control Bags are woven polypropylene (PP) sandbags for temporary flood barriers. Made from 100% virgin PP, they combine low empty weight with the tensile strength and flexibility required for filling, handling, and stacking. Standard and custom sizes, GSM, colors, printing, closures, and optional UV treatment are available for municipal, construction, commercial, and emergency-response procurement.

Material & Fabric Construction

The bags are produced from virgin PP flat yarns woven into circular fabric. Fabric GSM, yarn specification, and seam construction can be selected according to the required filled weight and handling conditions. The available 70–150 g/m² range covers different strength and cost requirements, while reinforced bottom stitching can be specified for heavier loads or repeated handling.

For outdoor storage or extended sun exposure, UV treatment can be added to reduce degradation caused by ultraviolet radiation. The treatment should be specified according to the expected storage and deployment conditions rather than assumed as a standard feature.

Sand Filling & Closure

For temporary flood barriers, USACE guidance recommends filling sandbags to approximately 1/2–2/3 of their capacity, leaving enough free space for the bag to flatten and conform to adjacent bags. Overfilled bags can create gaps between layers and reduce barrier stability.

When bags are filled and placed immediately, the opening can be folded underneath the filled portion. Drawstring or tied closures are more suitable when filled bags must be transported or stockpiled before deployment. Fine filling materials can migrate through woven fabric; where this is a concern, an inner PE liner or suitable coated construction can be specified.

Water Resistance & Environmental Performance

Woven PP does not readily absorb water and does not rot like untreated natural-fiber sacks. However, standard sandbags are not watertight. Seepage can occur through the fabric and between individual bags, so sandbag barriers should not be treated as impermeable flood walls.

For projects requiring greater moisture resistance, PE liners or coated constructions are available. Where additional seepage control is required, USACE guidance also uses polyethylene sheeting on the water-facing side of temporary sandbag barriers.

Deployment & Stacking

Prepare a firm foundation and remove loose debris before placing the first layer. Fill low areas first, then place bags flat and stagger the joints between successive rows. Tamp or compact each layer so that adjacent bags remain in close contact and gaps are minimized. Build multiple layers in a stepped or pyramid arrangement, with a wider base as barrier height increases.
